‘Heed’ a new Drop-In at St George’s
I am delighted to announce that the PCC at St George’s has agreed to start up a new Drop-In on Fridays. It will be called ‘HEED’, standing for Hear, Embrace, Enable, Delight, and will be open to all from 10am-4pm in the church and church centre every Frday, beginning on 3rd December.
This Drop-In is a key part of our Mission Action Plan, to reach out to vulnerable local people and give them a safe place to come and grow stronger.
Polly Falconer is heading up the team running this, so if you would like to volunteer to help or simply come along, please have a word with her.
One Love Choir at St George’s
It was such a joy to receive a message from the One Love Community Choir asking if we could help them increase their numbers! As a result St George’s has become their home. They had their first public event at the All Souls Service and we were delighted to see such joy in music. I will be working with them on future events including the Christmas Carol Service on 19th December. If you like to sing rehearsals are from 3pm-4.30pm each Sunday in church. Please do just turn up. NB. You do not need to be able to read music, but being able to hold a tune is definitely necessary!
Look forward to seeing you there.
Building Works at St Mary Magdalen’s
The new porch and toilet at St Mary Magdalen’s is coming along nicely. After some scary moments when we uncovered the foundations of the church, these have now been strengthened and the building work is moving on at pace.
We had hoped that the new toilet would be available to us before Christmas, but after a recent site meeting we sadly had to take the decision to keep it closed until all the work is finished, probably at the beginning of March 2022.
It will be a great excitement when we have a new entrance with a lift for wheelchairs and buggies. Please do continue to pray for the builders, Adams and Wade, who have been working really hard to keep the project on track.
Bulb Planting at St Mary Magdalen’s
On Saturday 6th November we welcomed the community Tilehurst, as well as the Mayor of Reading, to plant bulbs around the church. Groups including Guides and Brownies and the Royal British Legion gathered to plant over 1300 bulbs, so we should have a spectacular display next spring.
Children’s Church at St Mary Magdalen’s
It is so lovely to see children in our church family, and to help them in the growth in faith, Lesley has begun organising a team of leaders to teach them in the hall for part of the service. Please do pray for this venture, because it is so important that our children feel safe and excited about their faith.
Christmas and Covid
After last year I am sure we are all looking forward to a Christmas celebration that feels more like normal. The services that are taking place are listed in the diary section. But Covid hasn’t gone away and there are still large numbers of people contracting it and getting ill, so we want to do what we can to keep them safe. To that end, please can I remind you not to come to church if you have Covid symptoms, to get a test and to self-isolate if necessary. Covid advice for the Benefice remains in place: you are strongly advised to wear a face covering in church, use the hand gel provided as well as the track and trace QR codes, and to maintain social distancing if possible, especially when singing. Additionally, for the Rifles Concert on 7th December, you must have had a negative lateral flow test on the day of the concert to be able to attend this event; this is to comply with the Covid protocols of the band.
The First Family Christmas
Finally, if you know any children who like being read and sung to, please do check out a new Christmas book that I have produced with Tuuli Bell. This is a book that takes you through the Christmas story using Bible readings, poems and music. There is also a link included that gives you access to free downloads of all the music. You can find it on Amazon. Search my name or Tuuli’s name, or use the search term ‘First Family Christmas Interactive’, or you can use this link: The first family Christmas: An interactive music book for families : Carill, Adam, Bell, Tuuli: Amazon.co.uk: Books
